The space around the ISS is a near vaccuum. Any major breach of the hull would cause rapid depressurization of the craft in addition to the complete loss of the atmosphere inside. the result would be fatal and would only be survivable if the crew could isolate themselves in sealed off areas such as air locks or spacecraft like the shuttle or soyuz. This situation occurred on the Soyuz 11 mission from Russia. The capsule, carrying three cosmonauts, was breached when a plug that was supposed to release in the lower atmosphere released shortly after beginning their return trip to Earth. The resulting loss of atmosphere resulted in suffocation of the cosmonauts in about 40 seconds. Tests of survivability in a vaccuum showed that even if they hadn't suffocated, they would have suffered brain death in about 2 minutes due to depressurization. The space station is a much larger vehicle so such a small rupture wouldn't depressurize it nearly as fast, leaving some window of escape. And the ventilation system onboard may be able to combat the depressurization for a while, but the end result would be an ISS completely empty of any air.
