Pit and fissure caries are cavities that form on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, particularly in the grooves and crevices (pits and fissures) where bacteria and food particles can get trapped. These areas are harder to clean with a toothbrush, making them more prone to decay. To prevent pit and fissure caries, dental sealants can be applied to protect these vulnerable areas.
Root caries can occur at a pH of around 6.0 or below. This acidic environment weakens the mineral structure of the tooth roots, making them more susceptible to decay caused by bacteria. It is important to maintain a neutral or slightly alkaline oral environment to prevent root caries.
