A lot of comets are composed of a very high percentage of ice with a bit of dust and small rocks mixed in. They are in effect a big snow(ice) ball in space. As these comets approach the sun, the solar wind erodes the comet, and the material being microblasted away forms a long tail behind the main body of the comet. It's a great show, isn't it?
