It changes volume at different tempuratures, changing a noticable amount due to a small change in temperature.

Basicaly I eman that it's not gona increase in volume like 0.01% or something with a change in temperature of like 30 degrees celcius, for example. It changes enough in volume that you can tell (if the thermometer is marked) if the temperature changes one or two degrees.

Mercury is also useful because it is a liquid, so when it expands, it will simply move up the the tube.

I don't know what any more are, maybe it's cheap or something, I have no idea, or maybe it's because it's not transparent.

answer 2 a) Mercury is liquid at the usual temperatures of interest to us.

b) Mercury has a good coefficient of expansion, so the change in the length of the capillary is perceptible.

c) mercury is relatively affordable

d) since it is opaque, it is easy to see the capillary.

What are some advantages of using mercury thermometers?

mercury has better thermoconductiity and they have a greater range of readings

Why was the mercury thermometer invented?

The mercury thermometer was invented as a way to accurately measure temperature by using the expansion of mercury in response to changes in temperature. This allowed for precise and consistent temperature readings, making it a useful tool in various fields such as medicine, research, and industry.

What is an instrument that measures changes in air pressure using liquid mercury?

Any liquid can actually be use in a tube (barometer) to measure air pressure, but there are various advantages in using mercury for the purpose. 1. Mercury is a shiny liquid (a liquid metal) so it can be easily seen through the glass tube. Other liquid like water are transparent. 2. Mercury is very heavy. So only 76cms of it rises in the tube. Had you been using water for the purpose, you would need a glass tube as long as 55ft. 3. Mercury does not stick to the glass surface inside, so the reading obtained is much more accurate and precise. Remember: Water droplets stick to glass.

Why did they change the liquid in the thermometers?

A thermometer (from the Greek θερμός (thermo) meaning "warm" and meter, "to measure") is a device that measures temperature or temperature gradient using a variety of different principles. A thermometer has two important elements: the temperature sensor (e.g. the bulb on a mercury thermometer) in which some physical change occurs with temperature, plus some means of converting this physical change into a value (e.g. the scale on a mercury thermometer). Thermometers increasingly use electronic means to provide a digital display or input to a computer.

What is the year the thermometer was made by Galileo?

Galileo Galilei did not invent the thermometer. The first modern thermometer, using mercury in a glass tube, was invented by Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit in the early 18th century, around 1714.

it expands at constant rate and has got high boiling point.

Some laboratory thermometer use alcohol instead of mercury what are the advantages and disadvantges of using alcohol in thermometer?

Advantages of using alcohol in a thermometer include being less toxic than mercury, having a lower freezing point, and a wider temperature range. However, disadvantages include having a lower boiling point than mercury, being more flammable, and having a lower density which can affect accuracy.

What is the raw experimental measurement made when using mercury thermometer?

Using a thermometer we can measure the temperature.

Why is thermometer usually shakes before using?

It isn't necessary with new electronic thermometers, but if you still have an old hold-under-your-tongue-for-three-minutes mercury thermometer, the mercury will remain at the last recorded temperature until it is shaken back into the reservoir.

How many minutes do you take a rectal temperature?

If using a mercury thermometer - about a minute. A digital thermometer - a few seconds.

Who invented the mercury and alcohol thermometers?

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the mercury thermometer. Ferdinand II invented a thermometer using alcohol but it was very inaccurate.

Why you are using mercury in thermometer?

It has a reaction to temperature, so it'd be perfect for measuring it!

What are three ways of taking a vital temperature?

Three ways of taking a vital temperature are using a digital thermometer orally, using a tympanic thermometer in the ear, or using a temporal artery thermometer on the forehead.

What are the advantage of using Mercury in thermometer?

it can be easily seen it gets hot quickly it expands fast.. this is the advantage of mercury in thermometers..

What is the advantage and disadvantage of using alcohol in thermometer?

u don't have to flick the thermometer to reset the temperature reading when you use an alcohol based thermometer (unlike a mercury thermometer where you have to flick and flick and flick flick flick that thermometer for the mercury to be reset so that you can make an accurate reading) a disadvantage is that the alcohol thermometer is slightly less acurate The biggest advantage is that alcohol is not nearly as toxic as mercury, so that if the thermometer breaks, you won't be poisoned.

What are Disadvantages of using data logger instead of mercury temperature?

One disadvantage of using a data logger instead of a mercury thermometer is the potential for technical malfunctions or errors in data recording. Data loggers may also require more complex setup and calibration compared to a simple mercury thermometer. Additionally, data loggers may be more expensive upfront than a traditional mercury thermometer.

Who invented the Mercury thermometer?

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the mercury thermometer in 1714.many inventers invented there own version of the thermometer but the mercury themometer i think most likely is just a regular thermometer you put in someones mouth under there toung. The regular inventor of the thermometer that you put in your mouth is some spanish named guy called Santorio but i dont reallt know his last name
