J J thomson is credited with the discovery of the electron. Following some ground breaking research he determined that the electron had a negative electrical charge and had mass.

He modelled the atom as electrons orbiting in "sea of positive charge" setting the scene for experimental veification of this idea. This of course was NOT forthcoming as Rutherford soon afterwards got the then suprising result that there was a nucleus at the centre of the atom.

Without his insights into the nature of the lectron the development of chemistry and physics would have been delayed.
