Many maps look different, but they all have the same five parts:

  1. The title, telling the user what the map is for and what it depicts.
  2. The compass rose, which tells the user what all the cardinal directions are in relation to what is depicted on the map.
  3. The grid, which is the set of lines showing coordinates on the map.
  4. The key, which is used to define symbols used by the mapmakers so the map is more easily read.
  5. The scale, which shows the user how large things like landforms and streets and countries would be if they were actual size.
