Prairies
The grasslands in the Us are called "the Great Plains."
Grasslands are not exclusively called prairies in the US. The term "prairie" is commonly used in North America, specifically the central part of the continent. In other countries, grasslands may have different names, such as savannah in Africa, pampas in South America, or steppe in Eurasia.
Prairies are well suited to large scale agriculture. Enormous quantities of grain are grown on prairies. It would be much harder to grow grain on hilly or mountainous or swampy land. Prairies are the easiest.
Grasslands located closer to the equator than prairies are called savannas. Savannas typically have a mix of grasses and scattered trees and shrubs, and are found in tropical regions with distinct wet and dry seasons.
