I don't think he named any animals. He just came up with the whole idea of scientific classifications of animals so scientists that spoke different languages could speak together about the classifications of animals and still understand each other. The scientific classifications of the animals were based on the Latin language.

Linnaeus set up the whole binomial-hierarchical system of classification. In his time, he named (i.e. gave a binomial name to) about 12000 species of plants and animals.
