What caused the Union's tunnel into Petersburg to fail?
In July of 1864, the Confederate city of Petersburg was placed under siege by General Grant's forces. It would be a ten month siege and began following the Union's defeat at the Battle of Cold Harbor. In an attempt to capture the heavily fortified Petersburg, a Union regiment composed mainly of coalminers who were familiar with explosives came upon what seemed to be an ingenious plan.They set about digging a tunnel underneath Confederate entrenchments and planted enough gun powder to destroy the fortifications and blow up any Confederate soldiers in the way.On July 30, 1864 a huge explosion took place underneath Rebel lines that created a crater 170 feet long, 30 feet deep and 70 feet wide.Four hours passed and nothing happened. Somehow and whose command is not known, the Union soldiers decided to charge into the tunnel the explosion created.Confederate forces were stunned of course but as they gathered their wits, they shot the Union intruders one by one as they exited the tunnel on Rebel territory. The result was 4,000 Union casualties and 1,500 Confederate casualties before Union officers called for a retreat.

However, the very first world cup was the 'Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy' The Trophy was initiated by businessman and sporting enthusiast Sir Thoma Lipton, who wished to see a competition between the leading football clubs of Europe. The European football associations duly complied, but the FA of England refused to nominate a club. West Auckland, a lowly amateur side of coalminers from the Northern League were entered into the competition, although it has never been entirely clear why. A popular explanation in the town itself, is that Lipton had wanted to send Woolwich Arsenal to the Championship - an instruction to his secretary to "contact W.A." led to West Auckland being mistakenly contacted. West Auckland duly made the journey to Turin, where the first tournament was being held, many of the players paying out of their own pocket to do so. They beat Stuttgart in the semi-finals 2-0. In the final West Auckland faced Swiss side FC Winterthur and beat them 2-0 as well to take the trophy. Two years later, West Auckland returned, and after beating FC Zurich 2-0, they ran out 6-1 winners in the final over Italian giants and home team, Juventus. By the rules of competition, they were awarded the trophy to keep. The dicouraged European teams decided not to play the competition again. The trophy is on display in West Auckland Working Mens Club.
