It can only be used successfully in a few places round the world, where a large bay or estuary is so shaped (like Canada's Bay of Fundy) that a huge amount of water rushes through a narrow opening when tides rise and fall.

There are some substantial issues associated with generating power through tides.

  • The impact on local marine life
  • the concept is still in the experimental stages
  • If enough power is harness from Tides, a slowing of our annual orbit around the sun will occur causing as much as a 24 hour change every 2000 years.

The negative aspects are:

  • Tidal power will work best where there is a large bay with a narrow outlet to the sea, so the water moves very quickly through a small opening.
  • There are not many good locations round the world for this to happen.
  • Tidal power only works when the tide is coming in or out, that is about four times every day. It doesn't run continuously like hydro-electric power.
