Administrative rationalism is a discourse that exists between State and Industry and Community. The state acts as if it has the knowlegde to fix the problems that exist with in industry or the community. This might be through the creation of laws or setting of standards or regulations on certain activities or emissions.

The creation of agencies to administer these laws such as the Environmental Protection Agency are an example of administrative rationalism. The agency is set up to act as the main knowledge base on the environment. The piece meal dealing with different parts of the environment such as, air, water, land use, endangered species and pesticides is an attempt of adminstrative rationalism to manage parts of the environment.
