What are the advantages and disadvantages of solvent extraction?

The advantages are:

- Goldfish requires less solvent than Soxhlet (solvent in Soxhlet has to reach the siphon level).

- Goldfish is quicker because the sample is constantly in contact with the solvent.

The advantage of this system is that instead of many portions of warm solvent being passed through the sample, just one batch of solvent is recycled. This technique is particularly useful in cases when the pure compound is partially solubel in a solvent and the impurity is not soluble in that solvent and vise versa.Also the working principle of mechanism is so simple that we can obtain more desired compounds without any difficulty.

The purpose of using a soxhlet is the ability to perform a large number of extractions on a liquid or solid sample with minimal effort. Take, for example, a liquid sample to be extracted with methylene chloride. The sample is placed in the soxhlet and equipped with a round-bottom flask and a condensor. The MC is refluxed and condensed, causing it to fall and pass through the liquid sample. The solvent is returned to the flask via a special arm on the soxhlet. This extraction procedure is performed hundreds of times over the course of a few hours. It is the best way to recover small amounts of analytes which are very soluble in water.
