One would need a fluid (water, air or the like) and something to drive currents within it. Here's the skinny right from our friends at Wikipedia: "Convection in the most general terms refers to the movement of currents within fluids (i.e. liquids, gases, and rheids)." Jumping off from there, let's look at an example of a heat transfer possibility. When we use the oven, the kitchen gets warm. There is a bit of thermal radiation, but skip that and just check the convection side. Air (a fluid) is against the outside of the oven door. As heat from the door is transferred to the air, it becomes less dense than the air around it, and it rises. Some "new" cooler air takes its place and the process continues. A convection current has spontaneously arisen. The process of heat transfer drives the convection cycle; it sets up those currents in the air around the oven. Soon the kitchen is warmer than it used to be.

What is a substance that carries electricity under certain circumstances but not under other circumstances called?

A substance that carries electricity under certain circumstances but not under others is called a semiconductor.

What substance that carries electricity under certain circumstances but not under others circumstances called?

A substance that carries electricity under certain circumstances but not under others is called a semiconductor. Semiconductors have properties that allow them to conduct electricity under specific conditions, such as when they are doped with impurities or when they are subjected to heat or light. Common examples include silicon and germanium, which are widely used in electronic devices. Their ability to switch between conducting and non-conducting states makes them essential for modern electronics.

In which layer of the sun does granulation occur?

Granulation occurs in the photosphere, which is the visible surface of the Sun. It is characterized by the pattern of rising and falling material due to convective currents in the outer layer of the Sun.

What states of matter does convection occur in?

Under conditions of standard temperature and pressure convection is not possible in the solid state of matter. However under extreme conditions (e.g. the high temperature and pressure in the earth's mantle) convection is not only possible in the solid state of matter, but happens all the time just as in the liquid and gas states of matter but much slower.

What is a substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed under different conditions?

A catalyst is a substance that enables a chemical reaction to proceed under different conditions. It lowers the activation energy required for the reaction to occur, allowing it to happen more quickly or at a lower temperature or pressure. The catalyst itself remains unchanged in the reaction and can be reused multiple times.
