The primary factor that makes a wildfire so dangerous is its size. In general, a wildfire is a conflagration that devours huge quantities of fuel in its path. As such, it is a lumbering beast that is capable of great bursts of speed, and fire fighters cannot put enough water or other extinguishing agent on it to slow and stop it. This fire will go where it wants to (in response to terrain, fuel loads and weather), and when the geography is right, there is a lot of material that will burn, and weather favors the fire, it cannot be stopped.
