What are the different kinds of white lies?

I can think of two widely divergent types. one might be wishful thinking and a most positive ( benefit of the doubt) to cover what might be a gross tragedy or potential tragedy. This can take the shape of a phone call. Sometimes such things as death in the family can be so camouflaged. This has its merits and demerits. another type is the deliberate fostering of a myth such as Santa Claus which has clearly gotten out of control. I do believe there are certain things kids should be shielded from, and the type I of white lie has its purposes. It could even lead to a discussion of something that has multiple outcomes- like well the Lost Explorer. that sort of thing.

White lies are generally harmless lies told to protect someone's feelings or avoid conflict. Examples include lying about liking a gift, complimenting someone's appearance when you don't mean it, or saying you're busy to avoid an invitation.
