Lye is the term to refer to Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH), also known as Caustic

Soda, and in the past the term also applied to Potassium Hydroxide (KOH).

Both are strong bases (alkalies), solid (usually sold in flake and pellet form), white

in color. When added to water to make a solution they generate a lot of heat, so

care should be taken to add the base a little at a time having the dissolution

receptacle cooled in some way while stirring. Use of safety goggles and gloves is a must.

In a lye aqueous solution, Sodium Hydroxideis the solute and water the solvent.
