All the islands in western Lake Erie are slightly different having different limestone bases and different land uses. Kelleys Island is composed of Columbus Limestone while the Bass Islands are Dolomite. Almost one Half of Kelleys Island is unbuildable, due to the historically substantial quarry operation, the amount of State land and the two large camps, the Erie Co. 4-H camp and Camp Patmos, a Christian camp. While the largest in land mass (2800 acres), it has a smaller population than South Bass (and Put-in-Bay).
