Although commonly labeled the "worst greenhouse gas," carbon dioxide is not the most effective greenhouse gas. However, because it has the highest concentration in the atmosphere compared to all the other greenhouse gases that human emit (except water vapor), it is the one that has the biggest impact.

However, on a "per molecule" basis, many other molecules are more effective greenhouse gases. The top greenhouse gas, as reported by the Envirommental Protection Agency, is methane. This silent odorless gas is 21 times more effective in trapping in heat in the atmosphere. In recent studies reported by the EPA, one of the leading contributors of methane into the environment was natural animal emissions; raising the question of whether or not global warming is man-made problem. Other greenhouse gases include CFC's, SF6, and N2O and H2O.

Nitrous oxide is 310 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in trapping the heat.

Carbon Dioxide is the most dangerous greenhouse gas.

Well, the one that causes most global warming is actually water vapor, but we can't do anything about that. That has stayed constant for thousands of years. The ones we can do something about are:

  1. Carbon dioxide (causes up to 26% of greenhouse warming)
  2. Methane (up to 9%)
  3. Ozone (up to 7%)

Methane is 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, but there is not so much of it, so probably carbon dioxide is the most dangerous.

Earth science Which gases in the atmosphere are greenhouse gas and which are not?

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and water vapor (H2O). The most abundant gases in the atmosphere that are not greenhouse gases are nitrogen (N2) and oxygen (O2).

What gases are not greenhouse gas?

Greenhouse gases must have three atoms, so gases like hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2) are not greenhouse gases.

How are atmospheric gases like the gases in a greenhouse?

The glass on the greenhouse stops temperature from leaving or entering like the gases do to the earth. The atmospheric gases are called 'greenhouse gases' based on the idea that the gases 'trap' heat like the walls of a greenhouse do

What does the greenhouse do to the gases from the atmosphere?

The greenhouse effect warms the gases in the atmosphere.

Are oxygen and nitrogen important greenhouse gases?

Independently, oxygen and nitrogen are not greenhouse gases (though N2O, NO and NO2 are greenhouse gases). The most important greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide. Methane, although found in quite low concentrations is also important because of its proportionately greater effect.

Which country produces the most greenhouse gases?

China is currently the largest producer of greenhouse gases, responsible for approximately 28% of global emissions.

What type of cloud will prevent greenhouse gases the most?

What layer is most responsible for the green house effect?

The greenhouse effect is primarily caused by the presence of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere. These gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, trap heat from the sun, leading to warming of the Earth's surface. Thus, the layer most responsible for the greenhouse effect is the troposphere, the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere where most of the greenhouse gases are concentrated.
