The Juneau Icefield is 150 miles long north-to-south and feeds as many as 140 glaciers, 38 of which are considered large. The largest of these is the Taku Glacier with an estimated ice thickness of 4,500 feet. The glacier most easily accessible by the road system is the rapidly retreating Mendenhall Glacier, also one of the top tourist destinations in Alaska. The Eagle Glacier and Herbert Glacier are also located near the road system, though they require hikes through sometimes rugged terrain.
