Photosynthesis happens when a plant or an Autotroph uses sunlight as energy to make food. This happens when the sunlight is absorbed by the green leaves on the plant. The leaves absorb the light because they have chlorophyll which is a green pigment in the cell's chloroplast that absorbs light and it is also what makes the plant green. Other than sunlight coming into the plant, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Water (H2O) come into the plant as well. Carbon Dioxide comes into the plant through the Stomata, a small opening on the undersides of the leaves and water comes into the plant through the roots. The Carbon Dioxide then turns into Oxygen (O2) and the Water turns into Glucose (C6H12O6) which is a type of Sugar.

With the Glucose that was made in Photosynthesis, the plant will use it to turn it into energy. This action is called Respiration. Plants can store energy or release it. They release it when they use it and store it when they need it for later. When Heterotrophs eat Autotrophs, they gain energy from the energy that the Autotroph stored. Respiration releases Carbon Dioxide and Water.

Photosynthesis and Respiration are similar because they both have opposite formulas. Photosynthesis takes in CO2 and H2O and releases O2 and C6H12O6. Respiration takes in O2 and C6H12O6 and releases CO2 and H2O.

So as you know now that Respiration is when energy is made and you also know that the formula to make the energy requires oxygen but, there is a way of producing energy that does not need oxygen to make energy. This is called fermentation. In fermentation, each sugar molecule releases less energy than in respiration which is why fermentation takes much longer than respiration does. Fermentation does not require oxygen to make energy like respiration does. This is why alcohols such as wine take a very long time in their barrels, because they need to fermentate, hence the saying "this wine still needs to breathe a little" which means this wine needs to fermentate more, letting out energy, breathing, respiring (without using oxygen of course).

The process of photosynthesis starts off with capturing energy in sunlight. For plants, this stage occurs in the leaves. Leaves' green color comes from pigments, colored chemical compounds that absorb light. The main photosynthetic pigment in chloroplasts is chlorophyll. Photosynthesis allows chlorophyll inside each leaf to trap the light energy. Next, the cell produces sugars using the captured energy, which requires water and carbon dioxide. Water, that has been absorbed in the roots of the plant, moves up through the plant's stem to the leaves. Carbon dioxide enters the plant through small openings on the undersides of the leaves called stomata. Once the water and carbon dioxide move into the chloroplasts, they undergo a complex series of chemical reactions that are powered by the trapped light energy. These reactions produce chemicals as products. One product being sugars, and the other being oxygen. Some of the sugar is stored in other parts of the plant, while some is used by the plant cell for energy. Oxygen exits through the stomata and is given off into the air.
