Assuming that we are taking the Big Bang Theory seriously (rather than dismissing it with rolling eyes as I do), then when the Big Bang happened, gas and dust particles and such collided to form gas planets and terrestrial planets, and combinations of the two (the ones with water and such would be combinations), then the pressure of the gravity/non-gravity pushed it into great floating 'spheres', or at least it would have if it had not been rotating around the sun, which (a little known fact, but nevertheless true) shaped it into a more elliptical (oval-like) shape. This is how most planets, if not all, are made.
