There are 4 main categories of thunderstorm.

• Single-cell thunderstorms: These storms consist of a single isolated cumulonimbus cloud. These storms usually last no more than 30 minutes and are usually not very strong. However, under ideal conditions they can produce brief periods of severe weather.
• Multicell thunderstorms: These consist of clusters of individual storm cells similar to those in a single-cell storm. Individually, the cells do not last very long, but as one cell dies, the cold outflow acts as a miniature cold front, triggering another cell to develop. A multicell storm can sustain itself for hours in this fashion. These ssystems are capable of producing severe wind and hail.
• Squall lines: These form when thunderstorms line up and move forward as a band. Strong squall lines can produce very powerful winds, especially when they arrange into a backward "C" shaped called a bow echo. Squall lines may also occasionally produce tornadoes. Similar to multicell clusters, squall lines can sustain themselves for hours.
• Supercells: These storms, characterized by their rotation, are the strongest thunderstorms on Earth. Their powerful, rotating updrafts can produce large hail and tornadoes. Most significant tornadoes and nearly all violent (F4 and F5) tornadoes form from supercells. Like single cell thunderstorms, supercells are often relatively isolated from other thunderstorms, but are larger, stronger, and more organized. Supercells can easily last for hours and produce multiple tornadoes.
