electrical problems are almost always traced to junctions, which a switch contains; also, a poorly made switch might poorly conduct, or be 'made to fail.' Also, the mechanical properties of a switch make it susceptible to mechanical failure. Understand that most of these problems are inherent to an individual switch; you won't find many weaknesses in a Mack truck switch, for instance.
