There are many advantages. The most important are:

  • All countries in the world except one are either fully metric or in the process of converting, so there's a common measurement "language" shared by almost all of the world's population.
  • There are only 7 base units while the pound-inch system has 20
  • Larger and smaller amounts of all base units are simply ratios of 10, rather than using different ratios (4, 12, 16, 36, etc.) for different units. Conversions can be performed simply by moving a decimal point rather than remembering special conversion factors.
  • A standard set of prefixes is used for all larger and smaller amounts, regardless of whether they represent length, distance, area, and so on: 1000 meters = 1 kilometer; 1000 grams = 1 kilogram, etc.
  • Arithmetic using metric measurements is simpler and less error-prone because it doesn't require the use of fractions, and it's easier to perform on a calculator.

There are several advantages. Some of them are:

1. They are internationally agreed as standard. Not like a gallon which can mean one amount in the US and different amount in the UK.

2. Orders of magnitude for measuring the same attribute are related by simple multiples or fractions of powers of ten conversions and only a handful of prefices are required (although there are a lot more, if needed). By way of contrast, the Imperial system uses:

• 2 pints in a quart

• 3 feet in a yard

• 4 quarts in a gallon

• 6 feet in a fathom

• 8 furlongs in a mile

• 9 square feet in a square yard

• 12 inches in a foot

• 14 pounds in a stone

• 16 ounces in a pound

and so on, and on and on. The decimal structure also makes it simple to use scientific notation for very small and very large quantities.

3. It is used by most people in the world. The main recalcitrant countries are USA, Liberia and Myanmar. Even in the US, scientists normally use SI. When they don't they have disasters like the one that trashed NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter!

4. There are many simple relations between measures for one characteristic to another. For example, the SI unit of length is 1 metre. 100 square metres = 1 are, the unit for area. 1 cubic metre = 1000 litres, the unit for volume, the pressure exerted by 1 Newton over an area of 1 square metre is 1 Pascal.
