Define "basic knowledge of biochemistry" and then I will tell you what is important for EVERYONE to know and what is not. Seriously, if by biochemistry you mean "fundamentals of cellular metabolism," I am not sure how important it is to remember that Glucose is degraded to two 3-carbon compounds which are further broken down to CO2 and then made into ATP. Many people cannot make the connection as to what ATP is really used for. A more useful concept probably not taught cleanly to introductory biochem students is the Cori cycle. Now THAT is interesting. In graduate school they teach you how the Coris proved what happens in metabolism of the liver, skeletal muscle, and so on.

These essential nutrients which our body require are made up of different elements and compounds. Water we drink is another chemical compound. The DNA of our body is made up of several elements and compound. The fertilizers which we use for our crops are the gift of chemistry. Cloths which we are wearing are fabricated by using different chemical compounds. Cement which makes our house is made by using several chemicals. Even the power plants use the things like coal and uranium for the generation of electricity.

It is now clear that chemistry is an important part of our life and the necessity for the survival of human race. And with time human dependence on the chemistry and chemical are increasing. Therefore, we must have the basic understanding of chemistry to know our world.
