Chemical bonding is the joining of atoms to form new substances. The properties of these new substances are different from the properties of the original elements. An interaction that holds two atoms together is called a chemical bond. When chemical bonds form, electrons are shared, gained, or lost.
Valence electrons
Atoms that have lost one or more electrons form an ionic bond with an atom that has gained one of more electrons.
To form an ionic bond, calcium (which has 2 valence electrons) can donate its two electrons to sulfur (which requires 2 additional electrons to complete its valence shell). Therefore, one calcium atom can bond with one sulfur atom to form an ionic compound. Thus, only one calcium atom is needed to form an ionic bond with one sulfur atom.
They form a covalent bond.
When outer electrons interact they form a bond. (ionic or chemical)

An ionic bond will form between atom a and atom b if atom a loses electrons and atom b gains these electrons. Atom a becomes a positively charged ion (cation) and atom b becomes a negatively charged ion (anion), resulting in an electrostatic attraction between the two oppositely charged ions.
The pair of electrons is shared to form a covalent bond.
