Cause of the Earthquake:
In this area the Pacific plate moves northwest in relation to the North American plate at approximately 45 mm per year. This has led to deformations within the Earth's crust causing elastic strain energy to be stored.
In this specific case it is thought that the sudden rupture / movement of a strike slip / transform fault has caused the earthquake.
More specifically, the earthquake is thought to have occurred on the southern portion of the Laguna Salada fault, which is part of a series of northwest trending strike slip faults that run parallel to (but are not part of) the San Andreas fault zone.
However it should be noted that the area is tectonically complex with a large number of faults. As such investigations are underway and it may be found that another of the local faults caused the earthquake.
Magnitude:
According to the US Geological Survey the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2.
Location of Epicentre:
The earthquake oocured aproximately 40 miles south of the US border along the plate boundary between the North American and PAcific plates. The exact location has been pinpointed as 32.128°N, 115.303°W.
Depth to hypocentre:
Shallow - 10 km deep.
The Nepal earthquake, which struck on April 25, 2015, lasted for approximately 50 seconds. The earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 and caused widespread destruction across the country, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley. The event triggered landslides and avalanches, resulting in significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure.

The earthquake in L'Aquila, Italy, on April 6, 2009, lasted for about 30 seconds. It had a magnitude of 6.3 and caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the region.
Russia's most recent earthquake was a 4.7 which occurred on April 25, 2011.
The 2015 Nepal earthquake, which struck on April 25, had a duration of approximately 20 to 30 seconds. It registered a magnitude of 7.8 and caused extensive damage across Nepal, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley. The quake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including a significant one on May 12, further complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
The famous earthquake that is often associated with the splitting of California is the San Andreas Fault earthquake, particularly the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. This devastating quake, which struck on April 18, 1906, had a magnitude of about 7.9 and caused extensive damage throughout San Francisco and surrounding areas. While it didn't literally split California in two, it highlighted the significant tectonic activity along the San Andreas Fault, which runs through the state and is responsible for its geological divisions. The earthquake remains a pivotal event in understanding earthquake risk and preparedness in California.
The largest earthquake in California was the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. It occurred on April 18, 1906, and had an estimated magnitude of 7.9. The earthquake caused widespread destruction in San Francisco and triggered devastating fires, resulting in significant loss of life and property. It remains one of the most significant seismic events in U.S. history.
April 8 2010 in San Diego CA
The most devastating earthquake in California's history is the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. This earthquake, which occurred on April 18, 1906, had an estimated magnitude of 7.8 and caused widespread destruction in San Francisco and the surrounding areas, resulting in thousands of deaths and extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.
The Nepal earthquake, which struck on April 25, 2015, had a magnitude of 7.8. It caused widespread devastation, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley, resulting in significant loss of life and infrastructure damage. The earthquake was one of the deadliest in Nepal's history, with thousands of fatalities and many more injured.

The Nepalese earthquake, also known as the Gorkha earthquake, occurred on April 25, 2015. It had a magnitude of 7.8 and struck near the town of Barpak in the Gorkha District. The earthquake caused widespread destruction and resulted in significant loss of life, affecting many regions across Nepal. Recovery and rebuilding efforts have continued in the years following the disaster.
The San Francisco earthquake of 1906 lasted for approximately 40 to 60 seconds. It struck on April 18, 1906, and was followed by widespread fires that compounded the destruction caused by the quake itself. The earthquake is estimated to have had a magnitude of around 7.9, resulting in significant devastation and loss of life.
