Breast cancer, as all cancers, is highly complex and caused by mutations in numerous genes - each cancer, however, will likely have different gene mutations.

However, there are some genes which are commonly mutated in a small proportion of breast cancers (a mutation in these genes shows increased susceptibility in a number of families) - the most commonly referred to are BRCA1 and BRCA2.

BRCA1 is found on 17q21 (chromosome 17, q arm, band 21) and BRCA2 on 13q12.

List these in order from smallest to largest chromosome gene cell?

Smallest to largest: Gene (a place on a chromosome); chromosome (there are 46 in human cells); and DNA (because it accounts for all the genetic material in a cell).

What is BRCA2 6174 del T?

brca2 is a gene associated with breast and other types of cancer. 6174 del t is the identification of a particular mutation of the brca2 gene. The 6174 del t mutation occurs with a relative high frequency in ashkenazic Jewish populations and is associated with familial pancreatic cancer, among other cancers.

What does it mean to say that a gene is linked to a chromosome?

When a gene is linked to a chromosome, it means that the gene is physically located on that chromosome. This means that the gene is inherited along with the chromosome it is located on, and may be inherited together with other nearby genes on the same chromosome.

Gene is it the same as a chromosome?
