I am learning about this in my Science class, and when a geologist looks at an extrusion, they know it's an extrusion because it is Igneous rock, and an extrusion helps tell the reletive ages of the layers around it.

What tells us what a rock is made of?

The composition of a rock is determined by its mineral content. Rocks are typically made up of minerals that are formed from elements present in the Earth's crust, such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Through mineral identification and observation of physical properties, geologists can determine what a rock is made of.

When you are looking at a rock you are looking at Earth and?

When you are looking at a rock, you are observing a piece of Earth's history, as rocks contain clues about the planet's formation, geological processes, and past environments. Each rock tells a story about the conditions under which it was formed, whether through volcanic activity, sedimentation, or metamorphism. Additionally, rocks can reveal information about the age of the Earth and the evolution of life over millions of years. In essence, a rock is a tangible connection to the dynamic processes that have shaped our planet.

Which prinicple tells you how rock layers are laid?

The principle that describes how rock layers are laid is known as the Law of Superposition. This geological principle states that in an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks, the oldest layers are at the bottom and the younger layers are on top. This helps geologists determine the relative ages of rock formations and the history of the Earth's geological past.

What clue tells geologists intrusion?

A clue that tells geologists about an intrusion is the relationship between the rock layers. An intrusion is younger than the surrounding rocks it cuts through, so if the intrusion appears to cut across existing layers, it is likely an intrusion. Additionally, the mineral composition and texture of the intrusion can differ from the surrounding rocks, providing further evidence of an intrusion.
