What could you do to save energy?

Put insulation in your ceiling, put a timer on your geyser, turn the temperature of your geyser down, get a geyser blanket and insulate the pipes or if you can afford it get a solar powered geyser, turn the geyser off when you go away for the weekend / on holiday, recycle, car pool, use a jersey instead of a heater, or use the econoheat wall heaters, open your windows instead of putting on an air conditioner, use day/night bulbs outside if you forget to turn your outside lights off during the day, only boil the amount of hot water that you need, change all your light bulbs to energy saver bulbs, turn lights and TVs off when you're not using them, unplug your cell phone charger when its not in use.

1. Stop burning fossil fuel (this adds carbon dioxide to the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere).
2. Change to renewable energy (solar, wind, water, hydro, tidal and wave, geothermal, ocean thermal, biomass and biofuel) to generate electricity. Renewable energy does not pollute.
3. Plant billions of trees to replace the forests we have destroyed (trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

It may sound obvious, but turn off the lights as you leave the room. Drive the car less. A large percentage of car trips are to destinations less than 5km away. Ride or walk instead. Solar panels, hot water or power from sustainable sources are also important. Washing dishes by hand, drying hair and clothes naturally, turning appliances off at the switch-so they don't use standby power, try to buy locally, have a garden of some sort.

Design is an important factor in energy savings. A well designed house can save thousands in the long run. Small, shaded windows on the Western aspect reduce reflected heat, open Northern aspect- this lets in Summer breeze and Winter sun, good air circulation, insulation, blinds ETC. Be aware of chemicals in your food, clothes and other products, as well as the environmental challenges of today. If you can rally, or sign environmental petitions. Writing to politicians about your concerns can really help to. Spread the word that Climate Change is a threatening reality, and have good arguments against Climate Sceptics.
