The Colorado River formed the southeastern portion of the state of California. It was initially inhabited by over 70, individual indigenous tribes. The first European settlement Sir Francis Drake claimed a portion of California for England in 1576, 37 years after a Spanish expedition led by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo first discovered the coast. Between 1769 and 1770, the first missions were established.
