Copernicus did not first propose a heliocentric universe, nor was it proven by Galileo. The heliocentric idea first evolved in ancient Greece and was never officially proven by one man but rather over time, the general acceptance became higher of the idea as the ptolemaic charts became less accurate over time and the geocentric model became more complex to better fit the data.
