Although the principles of coriolis forces are well established, the forces involved in water going down the drain are so small that coriolis has less effect the the beating heart of the observer. So forget it--it's urban legend. Er, the link below is to a demonstration on YouTube of the coriolis effect at the equator, showing that water does indeed go straight down.

Which direction does the sink water spin on the equator?

Contrary to popular belief, water swirling down the drain is no related to the Earth's rotation or the Coriolis effect. The swirling vortex over the drain is likely related to angular momentum; the distance from the center of the rotation determines the speed of the rotation. o

Which continents are in the Eastern and Southern Hemispheres?

There are a few continents that are in both the north and the Southern Hemisphere and they are South America, Asia and Africa.

Why do you think the Gulf Stream current does not flow down into the Southern Hemisphere?

The Gulf Stream current primarily flows in the Northern Hemisphere due to the Earth's rotation and the Coriolis effect, which causes moving water to veer to the right in the Northern Hemisphere. Additionally, the Atlantic Ocean's geography, including the presence of landmasses like North America and the Caribbean, channels the current northward. The contrast in temperature and salinity between the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream and the cooler waters of the Southern Hemisphere also creates a natural barrier that prevents the current from flowing southward.

Water travels in what kind of wave?

water travels as a transverse wave (meaning that the water molecules move in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the path of the wave. the molecules move up and down while the wave moves in horizontal direction).

The planet that moves upside down?

There is no planet that moves upside down in relation to its orbit around its parent star. All planets in our solar system orbit the Sun in a consistent direction, with the northern hemisphere generally tilted toward the same direction that they are orbiting.

Why do water in the southern hemisphere turn clockwise down the drain and anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere?

it has nothing to do with the hemispheres, it depends on the shape of the drain. It can go either direction in both hemispheres

Why does water swirl in a clockwise direction when going down a drain?

The direction in which water swirls down a drain is determined by the Coriolis effect, which is caused by the rotation of the Earth. In the Northern Hemisphere, water tends to swirl clockwise due to this effect, while in the Southern Hemisphere, it swirls counterclockwise. However, the Coriolis effect is very weak on small scales, so factors such as the shape of the drain and the way the water enters it can also influence the direction of the swirl.

Which hemisphere is hottest?

The Southern Hemisphere tends to be hotter than the Northern Hemisphere because it has a higher percentage of water. Water heats up and cools down more slowly than land, so the Southern Hemisphere experiences milder temperatures.

Which direction does the wind blow in a low and a high pressure system?

It would blow from the mass of high pressure to the mass of low pressure.Answer 2Looking down from a satellite, the northern hemisphere high pressure systems move in a clockwise direction and anticlockwise in the southern hemisphere.Low pressure systems are the reverse of these, IE clockwise in the southern hemisphere and anticlockwise in the northern hemisphere.

Which way does water go down a drain?

Contrary to popular belief, the water is not affected by the motion of the Earth, or by which hemisphere the bowl is in.Water drains in a downward direction. How water goes down the plughole is determined by the state of the water when the plug is pulled, the construction of the bowl, and the shape and size of the plughole. It doesn't always go the same way. The vortex direction is dependent on small local factors, and the slightest impulse (motion, temperature) makes it unpredictably random. On a larger scale, the airflow into cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere is counter-clockwise, and in the Southern hemisphere clockwise. So if the Coriolis effect were the dominant factor, that would be the direction of the draining.

Why does water flow down a drain the opposite direction in the Southern hemisphere?

Water flows in both directions regardless of hemisphere. In Physics, there is the Coriolis Effect that describes the flow/movement of water due to a variety of factors, and this is sometimes used to add validity to the myth, but the Coriolis Effect does not occur in small bodies of water such as a sink or toilet. The direction of water flow in a a sink or toilet depends on the direction that the water flows into the sink or toilet -- regardless of hemisphere. You can test this yourself by pouring a pitcher of water from the left side of a sink and then from the right side, you will see that the water will flow accordingly -- this experiment will have the same result in Sydney, Australia as it will in London, England.

How do the seasons differ in the northern and southern hemispheres of earth?

The seasons are reversed, AND the flow of water is reversed. When flushing a toilet in the northern hemisphere, the water goes down clockwise. When flushing a toilet in the southern hemisphere, the water goes down counterclockwise.

Is Australia within the southern or northern hemisphere?

Australia is in the Southern Hemisphere

What direction do the ocean currents flow?

Clockwise in Northern Hemisphere. Counterclockwise in Southern Hemisphere.

Why water sinks in antyclock wise direction in northen hemispear?

It is a thing called the Coriolis effect. The Coriolis effect is an observed reversal in spin of "things" like water, storm systems, etc. (Toilets in the Northern Hemisphere spin in the opposite direction of those in the Southern) To better understand this effect, observe global weather patterns. High and Low pressure systems in the Northern hemisphere spin Clockwise and Counterclockwise, respectively. It is the opposite in the Southern Hemisphere, because of Earth's direction of rotation. This is the Coriolis Effect.

What direction does water spiral down the bath plug hole in the northern hemisphere?

Counter clockwise looking from the top. The same direction a tropical depression or low pressure area spins.

Why does water run down the bathtub drain like a swirl?

I think there are several factors that can cause the swirl. First, it is not, as many people erroneously think, the Coriolis forces. A tub is much too small for the Coriolis force to have any effect on the motion of the water. The location of the faucets and the shape of the tub probably have the the most effect. If the water already has some motion, it will cause the water to swirl in that direction.
