I was thinking about this today and came up with five "societal themes" that (I think) all civilizations have in common:

1) family- to exist together (democracy, tribal, feudal, democratic-republic, monarchy, theocracy)

2) religion - a codified way of relating to the supernatural (pantheism, monotheism, naturalism)

3) education - teaching so everyone can get a job (conveyor belt), teaching skills for a specific job (professional), and/or teaching leadership skills to a privleged few (leadership) (* this breakdown is from an educational speaker - can't remember his name right now)

4) military - either defensive, expansive (projecting power), opportunistic (raiding)

5) workforce - industrial, agricultural, hunter-gatherer, trade, technological

i am a history major so trust me on this i am right
