Plants can close their stomata to reduce water loss during times of stress using mechanisms like the accumulation of ions that cause osmotic changes, as well as the production of abscisic acid which signals stomatal closure. Additionally, certain plants, like succulents and CAM plants, have specialized adaptations that allow them to limit water loss by keeping their stomata closed during the day and opening them at night.
Cacti and pineapples are examples of plants that use CAM photosynthesis. CAM stands for Crassulacean Acid Metabolism, which is a type of photosynthesis adapted for arid conditions where plants open their stomata at night to minimize water loss through transpiration.
C4 and CAM are two alternative photosynthesis pathways found in plants. C4 plants have a specialized mechanism to improve CO2 fixation in hot and dry conditions, while CAM plants use a temporal separation of carbon fixation during the night and day to conserve water.

At night, the leaves of C3 plants close their stomata and wait until the sunlight. For CAM plants, this is when the plants open their stomata and allow the carbon dioxide to come in.

Many plants, called C3 and C4 plants, open their stomas during the day to let in carbon dioxide to instigate the process of cellular respiration. However some plants called CAM plants open their stomas at night. The main reason for this process is due to the physical environment the plants are located in. The majority of CAM plants are located in hot, dry and desert environments where water is scarce. As a result the CAM plants evolved so that they could close their stomas during the day and open them at night, to help retain water, at night the plants can still absorb CO2. Some examples of CAM plants are, cacti, pineapples, and aloe.
