A tsunami is a wave caused by an earthquake under an ocean or near an ocean. Because the wave is no more than a surge of water in open water, it can often have virtually no sound as it travels across the surface of the sea. When the wave reaches an obstacle then the noise produced can be deafening.

As with ordinary waves in an ocean, the sound is generated largely by a breaking wave and not by the swells that roll across the surface.
