A CAT or CT scan is shorthand for "Computed Axial Tomography". Breaking that down:

  • tomography - a process of developing a cross sectional x-ray view of a "slice" of the body
  • axial - the pictures are taken down the long axis (length) of the body
  • computed - the information for each slice is interpreted by computer to develop each slice and the images of the slices can be manipulated (stacked etc.) for different views
