Mars is a very very bad 'back up' place to try to exist, No atmosphere to breathe.No magnetic field to deflect DNA damaging UV rays and solar flares. No surface water.

Mars is livable if we teraformed it which would take hundreds of years. some of the other problems are the atmosphereic pressure is to low and all the water is frozen. so we would have to warm up the planet then get more oxtgen in the atmosphere.

We are adapted to breathing and living in Earth's atmosphere. A planet would need to have an atmosphere similar to that of Earth for people to find it livable.
