Maryland has three very different geographic regions each with special appeal. The Appalachian Mountains in the western panhandle lack the sheer drama of the Rockies but retain a subtle charm of their own. The Piedmont is more than a transition area. It is a minature portrait of the great farming areas of the central United States. The crown jewel is the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Tidal wetlands, richly diverse and never to be confused with what some term as swamp.
