What elements are found in soap?

Soaps are made up of Carbon, Hydrogen and Sodium/Potassium.

Generally a Carboxylic acid or "fatty acid", normally about 16-18 carbons long but can be between 4 and 24.

This Carboxylic acid "tail" is bonded to the Sodium or Potassium head.

Soap is a combination of lye and fats. Animal fats are sometimes used either with a combination of vegetable oils, or vegetable oils are used on their own.

The difference between solid and liquid soap is the type of lye used. Solid bar soap uses sodium hydroxide, (NaOH), while liquid soap uses potassium hydroxide, (KOH).

There are a few tiny differences during the making. Liquid soap using KOH takes a little longer to process. But that's the major difference.
