Almost all oil comes from rocks that were formed underwater, and ocean lifeforms called Diatoms, Radiolara, and Foraminifera, which are as small as a grain of sand. Over thousands of years organic remains pile up on the sea floor burying it so deeply it's turned into rock. Various chemical reactions help transform these things into oil and natural gas. ---- Sources: My Oil Research Paper, and The World of Oil website.
