Most craftsmen would change their mark from time to time so you can determine at least which generation or time period an item comes from even if you cannot determine the exact year. If there is no makers mark you will need to cross reference the pattern or design with the companies catalogs and see what years that design was being manufactured, but you will also need to have it examined for authenticity. Companies that copied someone elses design without permission were just as likely to not have any makers mark as they were to try and forge the mark.
