OH ions or also known as Hydro-oxide ions are given off by many different molecules such as H20, NaOH, any alcohol. This is normally due to disassociation of these molecule in an aqueous solution. For example if you disassociate NaOH in its individual components you will get an equimolar solution of Na (sodium) and OH (hydro-oxide) ions. Also if you think about some reactions of alcohols than these OH ions are given off by alcohols as well. OH is the defining characteristics of an Alcohol and when an alcohol is reacted with lets say in a substitution reaction with HBr it gives off the OH and replaces the OH with the new Bromine Ion and the H from HBr hydrogen bonds with the OH released by the alcohol to make Water H20.

So OH ions are given off by plenty of different molecules...and most compounds that contain an OH are at a Basic pH. Like NaOH is one of the strongest base known.

A substance with equal numbers of H and OH ions is an alkaline solution?

No, only exces of OH- gives you an alkaline solution and exces of H+ gives you an acidic solution. When they are EQUAL then the solution (water) is NEUTRAL, pH= 7.0

How can you know if something is a acid or base if you only have the molecular formula?

base Give OH ions and acid gives H ions

Is NaOH plus H2O acid or base?

it is a base, because when NaOH is added to water, it gives off OH- ions.

Can water be classified as an Arrhenius acid and base?

Water can act as both an acid and a base according to the Arrhenius theory. In pure form, water can ionize to produce H+ ions (acting as an acid) and OH- ions (acting as a base).

Acids give off what ions?

Acids give off H+ ions when dissolved in water. These H+ ions are responsible for the acidic properties of a solution.

Why some acids have OH ions?

Acids add Hydrogen Ions (H+) and not OH ions

What kind of ions do bases have a lot of?

Generally OH- ions. But there are bases without OH- ions.

Do acidic solutions give some or many hydrogen ions?

The more acidic a solution is, the more hydrogen ions it gives off.

Does a acid produce oh-ions?

acid produces H+ ions base produces OH- ions

What is Ba OH 2 individual ions?

When Ba(OH)2 dissociates in water, it forms Ba2+ ions and 2 OH- ions. The Ba2+ ion carries a double positive charge and is a cation, while the OH- ions are hydroxide ions and carry a single negative charge as anions.

Which molecule represents an ion found in a glass of water?

OH- and H+

Does an acid or a base produce OH in water?

A base produces OH- ions in water, while acids do not produce OH- ions. When a base is dissolved in water, it releases OH- ions, increasing the concentration of hydroxide ions and raising the pH of the solution.
