Quebec's physical features include the Canadian Shield geological formation, which covers the northern part of the province, and the Appalachian Mountains in the southeast. The province also has numerous lakes and rivers, with the Saint Lawrence River being the most prominent. Quebec has a varied landscape, with forests, mountains, and agricultural plains.
The Nile River Valley got its name from the Nile River, which flows through the region. The ancient Egyptians called the river "H'pī" or "Iteru," meaning "great river" or "river." Over time, this name evolved into "Nile."
A term for the region (not located in any other reference) is "Main Street," which apparently refers to the conurbation that stretches across southernmost Quebec and Ontario, from Quebec City on the lower St. Lawrence River, southwest through Montreal and Toronto, to Windsor on the Detroit River. By comparison with this region, and other urban centers such as near Vancouver, the remainder of Canada is much more sparsely populated.
