A physicist's answer. Archimedes principle: It would displace either it's volume of Mercury (if the specific gravity (SG) of mercury is less than that of gold...which I think it is and there were enough mercury for the gold to completely submerge the gold, i.e it sinks to the bottom) OR it would displace it's weight of mercury (assuming the SG of mercury is greater than that of gold...which I doubt, again assuming sufficient mercury in the container, i.e. it floats).
Also, amalgamation of the gold and mercury will take place over time.
I'm not sure what voltaic phenomenon might occur.
Is this question for real
If it is pure water, it doesn't change.
When red litmus paper is dipped in distilled water, it will remain red, indicating that the water is neutral and does not change the acidity. Similarly, when blue litmus paper is dipped in the same distilled water, it will also remain blue. This observation confirms that distilled water has a neutral pH of around 7, which does not affect the litmus papers' color.
dark green
If iron nails are left dipped in water in a test tube for a week, they are likely to undergo a chemical reaction called corrosion. Corrosion occurs when iron reacts with oxygen in the presence of water, forming a reddish-brown iron oxide known as rust. Over time, the nails will become covered in rust and may eventually weaken or deteriorate.

The object with the larger volume will displace more water when dipped in water, making it more buoyant. As a result, the balance will be disrupted, and the larger volume object will float while the smaller volume object will sink.
