If the windmill wouldn't swivel with the windflow, it would stop, then turn into the opposite direction :-)

But fortunately wind usually not changes its direction of flow 180 degrees suddenly, so the windmill can swivel ... and continue running.

Wind energy generators, which usually run autonomously, also adjust the pitch of the blades according to wind speed. Above a certain top wind speed, usually 25 m/s , they shut down, regardless of direction of flow.
