Cell cycle is the sum of all the processes that a cell undergoes from being born to getting divided . It includes growth and division i.e., when a diploid cell is born (either from a previous cycle or by fusion of 2 haploid cells) , it grows in size by increasing the protoplasm and increasing the no. of cell organelles like mitochondria . during this phase the cell becomes fully mature . then the division starts , this can either be mitotic (in somatic cells ) or meiotic (in germinal cells ) resulting in the formation of diploid (2n) or haploid (n) daughter cells. the cell cycle has following phases : G1 phase , S phase , G2 phase and M Phase. in G1 phase(first 'gap' ) the cell starts DNA and RNA synthesis i.e., replication and transcription. it takes about 4-9 hrs in mammals . S phase (synthetic phase) marks complete duplication of DNA n synthesis of histones and other important proteins . it takes about 5-7 hrs. G2 phase is the preparation of mitosis and is the smallest period of 1 hr . M PHASE is the phase during which division occurs . it is completed in prophase , metaphase , anaphase , telophase and cytokinesis . this results in the formation of 2 daughter cells from 1 .
