I have been through several earthquakes in my life ( I live in CA) and it depends on the quake on what you do. Generally, if I feel a small one I stay where I am and try to guess how strong it is. If there is a really strong one the best place in a house is in the doorway. The frame will protect you. If you are in an office get under a desk or table. In schools we practice getting under a desk. When it is over leave the building and go to an open space. Do not stay in an area where there are buildings around you because if there are any more shocks things can fall on you. So, a street in a big city is not smart to stand around in, but find an open park or space to go to. Several things can happen after a big quake. Water pipes break and so do gas lines. The gas lines are dangerous since fire can result. Things fall off of buildings and if they are older the building may collapse completely. If you are in car there isn't much you can do. I was in a car once when one hit and I just stayed where I was.
