So, as long as the acid and the base react in a closed system (none of the products escape measurement) the mass will remain the same. The only way the total mass could seem less then the original mass would be because some of the water, that is always created in the reaction of an acid or base, has evaporated. Or in the case of Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) carbon dioxide is released when it reacts with an acid, so unless it reacts in a closed system, that mass will escape measure.
