When an octopus loses one of its eight arms, it has the ability to regenerate that arm through a process called autotomy. Autotomy is a self-amputation process where the octopus can voluntarily detach its arm to escape from a predator or other dangerous situations. The lost arm will eventually regrow through cell division and regeneration, although it may take several weeks to months for the arm to fully regrow to its original size and functionality.
